I like taking pictures. I really, really do. I started off with a digital point-and-shoot camera, the Canon PowerShot S500. I had that camera for a few years and then I upgraded to the new Canon PowerShot SD870 IS digital camera at the beginning of 2008. That camera served me well on my trip to Europe; I went trigger happy and returned home with over 5,000 photos.

Finally, I decided that I reached the point in my (short) photography life where I should get a digital SLR and go to the next level with my newfound hobby. I’ve always been a fan of the Canon brand (film & digital) so I knew I would be in-line for a Rebel. I didn’t intend on buying a new SLR so soon after I just upgraded my point-and-shoot but with a new job, new cashflows, and a new camera model on the market, I put down my credit card and bought a brand new Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi (a.k.a. EOS 450D).

I’m incredibly happy with my XSi, thus far. Once I develop my skills with a digital SLR, I will definitely be getting better lenses. In the meantime, the kit lens will serve me just fine for the next few months while I learned the camera functions inside out. But that doesn’t mean I can’t get accessories right away. Here is my camera kit:

My Wishlist:

  • Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
  • Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
  • Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash

If you are in or around the Vancouver area, I highly recommend Kerrisdale Cameras for all your photography needs. They’ve got an incredibly helpful staff and it’s like a candy store for photographers (it is for me, at least!). I went in looking for a tripod and they showed me several different types and when they brought out the Manfrotto and showed it to me, I knew that was the one. I’m a big believer of paying more to get quality items and the Manfrotto is definitely worth every penny.

Finally, here are some of my favourite photos I’ve taken personally:
